Thailand Long-term ecological research
About Thailand LTER
-
ILTER regional network: East Asia-Pacific
There are approximately 10 research sites in Thailand aiming to conduct long-term ecological research (LTER) but there is no official network among these sites. However, the idea for promoting and coordinating the LTER network in Thailand has been discussed since early 2000 when the Kasetsart University, Faculty of Forestry (KUFF) hosted the First Regional Workshop on LTER in 2002 with the technical support from the East-Asia Pacific LTER. The KUFF, the focal point for Thailand LTER, has at least four research sites but the priority area for LTER for networking is situated at the Sakaerat Environmental Research Station (SERS) which is one of four Man and Biosphere Reserves (MAB) in Thailand.
The SERS is a natural laboratory for environmental and ecosystem study and a center for transferring scientific knowledge and technology to improve local wisdom and local livelihood.
Missions
- Protect natural forest ecosystems
- Conduct research and gather information on flora and fauna inside the SERS and surrounding area
- Promote and disseminate scientific information to researcher and interested parties
- Implement tasks recommended by the MAB Program
The KUFF which is one of the partners of SERS emphasizes on missions 2 and 3.
Affiliated organization
The SERS was established in 1968 by the Advance Research Project Agency of USA in close co-operation with the National Research Council of Thailand. Presently, the SERS is under the administration of Thailand Institute of Scientific and Technological Research (TISTR) of the Ministry of Science and Technology. The KUFF has worked closely with the SERS since the establishment of the station.
In 2005, the researchers of KUFF conduct four research topics under the Long-term Ecological Research Program funded by Kasetsart University, namely
- Monitoring and mapping plant diversity of semi evergreen forest at Sakerat Biosphere Reserve
- Relationships between environmental factors on plant community successional trends into climax forest at Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve
- Relationship between small mammals and plant communities at Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve
- Species diversity and behavior of pollinator insect at the Sakaerat Biosphere Reserve
