GCTE: Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems
Global Change and Terrestrial Ecosystems (GCTE) is a Core Project of the International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP), an international scientific research programme established in 1986 by the International Council of Scientific Unions (ICSU). Its scientific objectives are: (1) To predict the effects of changes in climate, atmospheric composition, and land use on terrestrial ecosystems, including (i) agriculture, forestry, soils; and (ii) biodiversity; (2) To determine how these effects lead to feedbacks to the atmosphere and the physical climate system.
GCOS: Global Climate Observing System
GCOS is intended to be a long-term, user-driven operational system capable of providing the comprehensive observations required for: (1) monitoring the climate system, (2) detecting and attributing climate change, (3) assessing impacts of, and supporting adaptation to, climate variability and change, (4) application to national economic development, (5) research to improve understanding, modelling and prediction of the climate system. GCOS addresses the total climate system including physical, chemical and biological properties, and atmospheric, oceanic, terrestrial, hydrologic, and cryospheric components.
GOOS: Global Ocean Observing System
GOOS is a permanent global system for observations, modelling and analysis of marine and ocean variables to support operational ocean services worldwide. GOOS provides accurate descriptions of the present state of the oceans, including living resources; continuous forecasts of the future conditions of the sea for as far ahead as possible, and the basis for forecasts of climate change.
GTOS: Global Terrestrial Observing System
GTOS is a programme for observations, modelling, and analysis of terrestrial ecosystems to support sustainable development. GTOS facilitates access to information on terrestrial ecosystems so that researchers and policy makers can detect and manage global and regional environmental change.
IGBP - International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme
The International Geosphere-Biosphere Programme (IGBP) is a research programme that studies the phenomenon of Global Change. The vision of IGBP is to provide scientific knowledge to improve the sustainability of the living Earth. IGBP studies the interactions between biological, chemical and physical processes and interactions with human systems and collaborates with other programmes to develop and impart the understanding necessary to respond to global change.
Introductory Information Management Videos
These videos were developed by the US LTER Network to introduce basic IM concepts, with emphasis on EML.
LTER Information Management: Considering the Conceptual (Part A)
A movie about Information Management Concepts by Karen Baker, Palmer LTER Information Manager
LTER Information Management: Considering the Conceptual (Part B)
The second half of the presentation by Karen Baker, Palmer LTER Information Manager.
ALTER-Net: A Long-Term Biodiversity, Ecosystem and Awareness Research Network
ALTER-Net-1 was a EU-funded project running from 2004 to 2009, with the aim of better integrating European biodiversity research and communication capacity. ALTER-Net was one of the key drivers developing the LTER-Europe network and establishing a series of European LTSER platforms. Many of ALTER-Net's partners are committed to continuing to work together in ALTER-Net-2.
Biodiversity Communication Resource Centre (ALTER-Net)
Provides useful resources for anyone interested in communicating about biodiversity with the public and other stakeholders. bioCRC was developed by the EC ALTER-Net Network of Excellence.
Nature and Biodiversity News & Views
Nature and Biodiversity News & Views is a web-based communication tool. The aim is to present interesting topics relating to nature and biodiversity to the general public. Users can read the topics, then provide their opinions in the form of multi-choice questions and/or free text. They can also read other peoples' views.
SCANNET - A Circumarctic Network of Terrestrial Field Bases
SCANNET is a network of Terrestrial Field bases, Research Stations Managers and user groups that are collaborating to improve comparative observations and access to information on Environmental Change in the North.
Getting Started with Ecological Metadata Language - Using Morpho
Inigo San Gil demonstrates how to create an EML document using the EML editor software Morpho.
Getting Started with Ecological Metadata Language
A short video illustrating how to create an EML document using the oXygen XML Editor.
LTER-Europe is the European regional network, a member of ILTER. The mission of LTER-Europe is to track and understand the effects of global change on ecosystems and the interaction with human activities. By this it is possible to give recommendations and support for solving current and future environmental problems.
South African Risk and Vulnerability Atlas (SARVA)
SARVA, a new atlas of local risk and vulnerability in the context of global environmental change, will be launched in January 2010. The Atlas is aimed at equipping decision-makers with information on the impact and risk associated with global change in the region.
BioFresh is a multi-partner EU FP7 funded project that is creating a network of databases and a data portal for freshwater biodiversity science and policy. As well as access to a data portal, the BioFresh web-site includes a lively blog, a freshwater curiosity feature and access to freshwater biodiversity-related news and resources.
GBIF: Global Biodiversity Information Facility
GBIF enables free and open access to biodiversity data online. GBIF is an international government-initiated and funded initiative focused on making biodiversity data available to all and anyone, for scientific research, conservation and sustainable development. ILTER and GBIF have signed a Memorandum of Understanding agreeing to cooperate.
The EU-funded INTERACT project has a main objective to build capacity for identifying, understanding, predicting and responding to diverse environmental changes throughout the wide environmental and land-use envelopes of the Arctic.
